AlphaTauri recently sacked Nyck De Vries because of his poor run of form with the team. Keeping this in view, the former Toro Rosso(AlphaTauri) driver and Red Bull junior Jaime Alguersuari has claimed that had Sergio Perez been a driver at the Faenza-based team; he would not have lasted for long.

The Red Bull group is well-known for being ruthless in treating its pool of drivers. No matter how big the name is, the Austrian outfit has always maintained a very strong stance. Whenever a driver has not performed at Red Bull and AlphaTauri, the hierarchy has never hesitated to sack that driver; the latest example was Nyck De Vries.

Jaime Alguersuari, being a former driver at AlphaTauri, is well aware of the pressure that comes with driving for the team and feels Sergio Perez would have had a tough time had he ever been its driver. While discussing the same with Skysports, he added, “We have to be clear that Checo [Perez] was never in the junior team.”

If he was, considering how Helmut Marko judges drivers, he would not have lasted a year.” Alguersuari has made it crystal clear that Perez would not have been able to save his seat for long had he been on the junior Red Bull team. Helmut Marko is the major decision-maker on the team and was one of the main figures that decided to sack De Vries.

Sergio Perez is nowhere near Max Verstappen in 2023

Sergio Perez has come under a lot of criticism for his continuous mediocre performances in the recent F1 races, he has not been able to match Max Verstappen in the same machinery, and many pundits have raised questions as if he is up to the task. After 11 rounds in the ongoing campaign, Verstappen has scored 255 points in comparison to Perez’s 156.

Algursuari is also very surprised with how badly the Mexican has performed, and while shedding light on the same, he added, “You have a winning car and have to use it. It’s not acceptable that Perez is always half a second or seven-tenths slower. If your team-mate is winning all the races, you have to at least be on the podium, not on your best day being on the podium.”

Sergio Perez started the 2023 campaign on a very strong note by winning a couple of races, but as the season has rolled on, he has seen a massive dip in his performances. The upcoming race is the Hungaria Grand Prix, and considering Perez’s recent F1 woes, it could be a great launching pad toward an upturn in form.
