Michael Schumacher is one of the most well-known names historically in Formula 1, with a legendary career known by fans all over the world. The German recently enjoyed his 50th birthday as he recovers from a skiing accident 10 years ago.

Schumacher’s future after F1 was uncertain before the accident, but his ex–teammate Johnny Herbert has some speculations. Herbert believes Schumacher could have made his way into management at Mercedes, taking the role of team principal at the Brackley-based team, an opinion shared by Ross Brawn.

Knowing his character I would not have been surprised to see him jump into a role as a team principal at Mercedes for example and find a way of moving into the management side. Would he have been good at it? Not all racing drivers have been. Alain Prost was the prime example who never quite worked out when he had his team. Niki Lauda did it but only on the management side with Mercedes. Would he and Michael have worked well together? Actually I think yes. They would have had both the old school and new school experience.

Schumacher retired just a year before his accident, having driven for Mercedes for four seasons of F1. The former Ferrari driver had returned from a hiatus after retiring for the first time after the 2006 season won by Fernando Alonso.

Johnny Herbert reveals speculation behind Michael Schumacher’s condition

Michael Schumacher suffered an accident while skiing with his family in December of 2013, that sent the German F1 legend into critical condition. Schumacher has spent the rest of his years recovering, gradually improving his condition while being taken care of by his family.

Nearly all of the 55-year-old’s updates about his condition have been kept private, apart from some vague mentions from his family. But Johnny Herbert, F1 race winner and Schumacher’s teammate at Benetton has claimed that there are rumors from those close to him that he can sit down for dinner, an optimistic turn for his recovery.

I hear, from those within F1, he does sit at the table for dinner but don't know if that is true. I can only read between the lines. We haven't heard much from the family and understandably so.

Schumacher retains many friendships that he holds close and dear to himself. His brother Ralf Schumacher and former team principal Jean Todt continue to keep tabs on Michael to check on his condition, remaining in contact with him.
