Daniel Ricciardo was on the sidelines in 2023 until he got the call up to AlphaTauri to replace poor-performing Nyck De Vries. Right off the bat, it was clear that the Australian hadn’t lost an inch of pace. However, drama struck the Honey Badger at the 2023 Dutch GP where a crash led to him breaking his wrist. This meant that Ricciardo would be out for the next few races.
In came Liam Lawson to sub for the injured eight-time Grand Prix winner. Just like Daniel, the Kiwi driver has been impressing the paddock with his performances. Last weekend at the Singapore Grand Prix, Liam knocked out Max Verstappen from Q2 and proceeded to compete in Q3. This was a first for him and for the Dutchman who had terrible pace at Singapore.
Daniel Ricciardo has seven fractures in his hand, and it will surely take some time for him to recover. Until then, Liam Lawson will effectively be racing in his place. After seeing the Kiwi perform, many fans have been pushing for Red Bull to hire him full time. American racing icon and Sky Sports pundit Danica Patrick sent some Ricciardo fans in a fit of rage after stating (as quoted by DailyMail) , “Daniel Ricciardo is obviously at the end of his career.“
Daniel Ricciardo will be able to return to race by the Qatar GP
The Qatar GP takes place on 8th October. Daniel Ricciardo has already missed the Dutch and Italian and Singapore Grand Prix. Now, he is projected to also miss the Japanese GP that will be taking place in the month of September. However, if he is able to recover fast, a return to racing at Japan is also a possibility. However, with it being a demanding circuit, it will be interesting to see if Red Bull want to take the risk.

Many Daniel Ricciardo supporters expressed their frustrations on social media shaming Danica for her comments. Ted Kravitz has also joked that Daniel will not make the joke of breaking his hand again in light of Liam Lawson’s recent performances in 2023. The Aussie driver watched the progress of the Kiwi from the sidelines throughout the Singapore GP race weekend.
