Sergio Perez, the Red Bull Formula 1 driver, has had a pretty up-and-down campaign in the 2023 F1 season. During the initial stages, he was matching the reigning World Champion, Max Verstappen, in terms of performance, but as the season has rolled on, he has drifted away in the driver’s standings.

F1 pundit Karun Chandok has been keeping close tabs on the exploits of Sergio Perez this year, and he feels that the Miami Grand Prix was the event where Max Verstappen put a heavy dent in Perez’s 2023 optimism. He believes that since then, the Mexican hasn’t been able to perform consistently.

While talking about the same recently, he is quoted by racingnews365.com, “But ever since he got overtaken on Lap 48 in Miami – it’s just gone away from him. I look at what happened even at the weekend at Spa. Max got ahead of him and he put 22 seconds on him in 27 laps. That’s a big chunk of performance to put around a track where they are spending a lot of time at full throttle driving around in a straight line, essentially.

To me, that is the cause of concern, the only cause of concern, in the Red Bull camp. Is this the fourth teammate [after Daniel Ricciardo, Pierre Gasly, and Alex Albon] that Max has potentially broken? Who can they have alongside him? Or do they just say: ‘You know what, we don’t really need anyone to be challenging him, we’re happy for somebody to be half a second off the pace because our car is good enough for Max to be able to deliver at that level,” he added.

While Sergio Perez has come under extreme criticism in recent events at the pinnacle of motor racing, the only good thing going for him is that he has a contract at Red Bull until the end of the 2024 season. He has got several opportunities remaining on his hands to change people’s opinions in the F1 paddock.

However, despite Perez having a contract until 2024, he can’t afford to take anything for granted. Red Bull has a long history of sacking underperforming drivers. If the 34-year-old is not able to showcase a decent upturn in form during the second leg, there could arise a possibility that he would be shown the exit door at Red Bull.

F1 is currently in its summer break, and this time will provide Sergio Perez with the opportunity to dwell on his past mistakes and make sure that de does not repeat them during the second leg. The remaining races of the 2023 F1 season will be extremely important from Perez’s point of view.
