Logan Sargeant made his Formula 1 debut in 2023 with Williams Racing. The Grove-based team had Sargeant in its junior program and promoted him to F1 this year. The 22-year-old was the first American driver in the sport for the better half of a decade. However, F1 pundit Lawrence Barretto believes that the Williams driver might be replaced by Mick Schumacher next season.

Sargeant has struggled to match Alex Albon at Williams this year, with the Thai driver delivering impressive performances. As such, Barretto has affirmed that the American driver needs to step up on his results if he wants to live up to the expectations of the British team. He wrote in his F1 cloum, “He [Logan Sargeant] needs to not only find consistency but also close the gap to Albon, particularly in qualifying, and get himself on the scoreboard.”

Moreover, the F1 pundit claimed that Mick Schumacher is already being seen as a viable candidate for the seat at Grove. The German driver has garnered praise for his duties at Mercedes as the team’s reserve driver this season. Subsequently, Sargeant might soon face the pressure to perform to save his F1 career. Barretto explained, “If he [Logan Sargeant] doesn’t, his seat is under threat. Mick Schumacher would be an obvious contender.”

Williams poached Mercedes’ Strategy Director, James Vowles, earlier this year to take up the role of Team Principal. Vowles was a close confidant of Mercedes boss Toto Wolff before shifting to the Grove-based team. Rumors had emerged that Wolff had tried to convince his former colleague to have Mick Schumacher replace Logan Sargeant mid-way through 2023.

Schumacher had been in talks with Williams last season to join the team for 2023 potentially. However, the British team decided to promote Logan Sargeant to a full-time F1 seat. Although with the added connections between Mercedes and Williams, the German driver now looks like a much more promising option than he did almost a year ago.

Thus, Lawrence Barreto was convinced that Logan Sargeant needed to step up his game throughout 2023. The American driver must deliver some good results if he wants to earn a contract extension with Williams. With Mick Schumacher already prepared to replace Sargeant at a moment’s notice. It remains to be seen if the Williams driver can make a mark in his rookie season.
