F1 has taken the initiative to make the sport environment friendly and also sustainable in the years to come. But, at the same time, F1 is also looking to expand its reach by tapping into the untapped markets and changing the perception from a rich man’s sport to being equally popular amongst all age groups. Hence, it becomes imperative for the governing authority to find the right balance between the two.

All the team bosses have come to a consensus to have regionalized races from 2023. This seems to have happened for two major reasons.

Firstly, the budget cap has made it difficult to bring in upgrades every week especially if we take the crashes into consideration. So, this would help the teams to reduce the cost in this day and age when inflation is soaring high. Therefore, all the teams will benefit from this move. Secondly, it would lessen the hassle of flying from one geographical location in one part of the globe to another and in turn make the sport a tad bit more environment friendly.

F1 had also pledged to net zero carbon emissions happening from their operations, events, logistics and their race cars by 2030 and this decision shall substantiate the claims that the organization had made.

Christian Horner came out in the support of the decision. He said, “I think if you look at the calendar, it makes sense to group some of the races together.”

“Whether it’s some of the American races, some of the Asian races, Europe, obviously. Some of the calendar this year when you look at the geographics of it, Azerbaijan to Montreal, going to Australia for a weekend, it’s about as expensive as you could make it.”

“So I think Stefano is sympathetic to that, but of course, he’s got many challenges with the different promoters to get a calendar that you want,” as reported by motorsport.

This decision will be welcomed all around the world keeping in mind the climate crisis that we are facing and it will continue to get worse if we don’t take major steps towards the goal of sustainability.
