Sergio Perez joined Red Bull in 2021 alongside Max Verstappen. Perez has failed to live up to expectations this season, with the two-time world champion continuing to dominate the sport with nine wins in 11 races. Unfortunately, despite making it to the top 10 shootouts at the Belgian GP, the Mexican driver continues to trail behind his teammate by a massive margin.
Verstappen once again went on to take the Pole position this season. The Dutch driver put in a stellar lap at the end of the session that saw him obliterate the competition. At the same time, Sergio Perez did improve in Qualifying compared to his results in recent rounds. The 33-year-old put his RB-19 in third place, albeit by a difference of 0.877 seconds to his teammate.
Checo will start from second place at the Belgian GP, as Verstappen has a five-place grid penalty for a new gearbox. As such, Perez will start alongside the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc on the front row. This could be the perfect opportunity for the Mexican driver to finally grab his third win of the season after a slump in performance since the Monaco GP.

Fans were stunned by Sergio Perez’s deficit to Max Verstappen’s pole time at the Belgian GP

Fans on Twitter were quick to share their views. One user blatantly urged Red Bull to sack Sergio Perez for failing to provide results that were expected from the 33-year-old. The user wrote, “Get that fraud out of the car.” While another fan mentioned that Perez was simply not on the level of the two-time world champion despite racing with the same car. The fan replied, “Same car different drivers.”
One fan believed that Perez was wasting the potential of the mighty RB-19 this season as Max Verstappen continues to achieve more success. The user commented, “Mexican Minister of Mid…what a waste of a rocket ship.” Although, one user defended the 33-year-old as they believed that Verstappen was simply in a different league. The user stated, “And he was 3rd… nobody can beat Max Verstappen.”
Thus, Sergio Perez has once again failed to challenge Max Verstappen for pole position. The Mexican driver had no chance in front of a dominant Verstappen who was eight-tenths quicker than second-placed Charles Leclerc. As such, it appears that Perez will continue to have a hard time matching his world champion teammate over the course of this season.
