Red Bull dominated Formula 1 in 2023. Max Verstappen took a record-breaking nineteen race wins this year. On the other hand, Verstappen’s teammate Sergio Perez could only bag two victories. The three-time world champion is often labeled as the ‘lion’ by many in the paddock. However, Red Bull recently faced backlash after referring Checo to an animal.

The Austrian team posted pictures of Verstappen and Perez on X. The caption mentioned the the Dutchman’s nickname, the lion along with ‘friendly dog’ directed towards Sergio Perez. Certainly, this came as a shock for many on social media. Although there is context what seems to be a rather disastrous caption.

Recently in a video, Perez was asked which animal would he be associated with. The Mexican driver claimed that he would be a friendly dog. Subsequently, Red Bull used this answer for its post on X. However, this controversial caption was not taken well by many fans online.

Fans on X lashed out at Red Bull for this post. One user wondered if Helmut Marko had taken over the X account of the Austrian team. The user asked, “Is Marko in charge of your tweets now?” Marko has made some controversial comments about Sergio Perez in the past. Another fan believed that the caption was disrespectful towards the 33-year-old. The fan wrote, “Really? this is disrespectful.”

One fan claimed that the caption was an insult to Perez. The fan commented, “This post is insulting.” Another fan joked that such a statement showed how valued Checo is at Red Bull. The user replied, “Nothing says valued team member like being called a friendly dog.”

Although, some users did try to mention the context of the video to try and calm down other fans in the comments section.

Certainly, Red Bull must not have expected such backlash for this post. However, the Austrian team should have given proper context before using such a caption as it could misinterpret the situation for fans. It remains to be seen how Milton Keynes handles this situation after angering several fans on social media.
