The Australian Grand Prix is a fan favorite in the F1 calendar. The race is hosted at the Albert Park Circuit in the city of Melbourne. Although the track is exciting, overtaking has been a hurdle in recent years after Formula 1’s higher downforce cars. However, the organizers have tried to facilitate overtaking for some time now. Subsequently, modifications have been made for this year as well.

The 2023 iteration of the race has been labeled as the “Fastest Australia Grand Prix ever.” As a fourth DRS (Drag Reduction System) is added to the track. This in turn will allow the cars to a claimed speed of over 340kmph or 211mph on the straights. Additionally, this zone will also aid in overtaking maneuvers. As drivers will get another opportunity to make a move on the car at Albert Park.

“Going to cause red flags” – Fans question the need for a fourth DRS zone for the Australian Grand Prix

The DRS is significant in aiding drivers to stay close to the car in front

Fans on Twitter were not pleased with this announcement. Subsequently, One user even urged the FIA to remove the rear wings entirely. In a bid to have all zones with DRS. The fan said, “Lets just remove rear wings altogether. Shall we #ArtiF1cial” Similarly, another fan questioned the Australian Grand Prix layout for needing so many DRS zones. Hence, the fan wrote, “If a track needs 4 DRS zones something is probably wrong.”

Additionally, another fan called out the added danger at the Australian Grand Prix with the fourth DRS. The fan replied, “That’s just going to cause red flags. So well done.” Subsequently, one user was quick to highlight last year’s turn of events. When the fourth DRS was removed after Friday on safety grounds. The fan user, “Wasn’t this already supposed to be a thing last year which got removed because it was too dangerous?” Fernando Alonso was a staunch critic of this in 2022.

Thus, the addition of a fourth DRS zone at the Australian Grand Prix is not met with positive fan reception. Fans are concerned about the increased number of DRS zones throughout the calendar during a time when F1 has often proclaimed better racing to be a priority. However, it remains to be seen whether this addition will improve racing this time around or will it suffer a similar fate once again.
