The Azerbaijan Grand Prix was milder than it is usually accustomed to being, with a minimum of accidents and on-track incidents. Sergio Perez crossed the line in P1 to take the top step of the podium, followed by his teammate Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc. The race’s main incident was a safety car deployed on lap 11, which potentially caused Verstappen the win following an error from the team.
Perez was overjoyed with his performance, becoming the first driver to win multiple times at Baku. He had made his intent to challenge Max Verstappen for the title clear, and given the opportunity, unrestricted by team orders, Perez took the spotlight and beat him. This puts him only 6 points behind Verstappen in first, putting the pressure on his teammate.
This mounts the pressure on both leaders to keep their battles on track cleanly while simultaneously avoiding a rift, requiring the team to intervene. Leclerc overall had a quiet race, succumbing to the overwhelming pace of the Red Bulls, and holding off Fernando Alonso, managing to secure his best finish this season, a morale-booster nonetheless. The events of the cooldown room that followed captured fans’ attention.
In the post-race, preceding the podium celebrations, the trio made their way into the cooldown room, where Verstappen and Charles Leclerc’ were in discussion, and the latter took his seat where Perez, the winner, was meant to be. Once Perez entered the room and set down his helmet, Leclerc offered him his seat back, which the Mexican politely declined and took Leclerc’s assigned seat instead. Fans have reacted to this hilarious encounter on Twitter.
Here is how fans reacted to the trio in the cooldown room
Fans had some pretty crazy theories about the Perez-Leclerc interaction. Some claimed that Perez didn’t want to sit alongside Max, while some used the opportunity to mock the Ferrari driver’s poor luck in the 2023 season. This funny, lighthearted encounter has led to fans sympathizing with Charles Leclerc’s struggle to win a race thus far. However, the Monegasque is a good sport, laughing it off with the other two drivers. Ferrari made a big leap this weekend, and should that continue, we could see Leclerc take that seat, rightfully!
