Max Verstappen headed to the Belgian GP with a streak of multiple pole positions and race victories. The two-time world champion has dominated the 2023 F1 season with nine race wins. However, the Dutch driver almost lost out on a chance to get pole at Spa-Francorchamps after a frustrating Q2 session. Verstappen’s race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, a.k.a GP, shut down the 25-year-old on the team radio after the session.

The reigning world champion narrowly made it to the Top 10 shootout after finishing P10 in Q2. Max Verstappen complained to Lambiase about missing out on going for another run in the session. The Red Bull engineer was having none of it. As GP gave a stern reply to the 25-year-old, claiming that the Dutch driver would not have energy left for when the track had become even quicker.

GP said, “And then when the track was two seconds quicker on the final lap and you had no energy left, how would that have gone down?” Certainly, this was enough to remind Verstappen that the team had made the right call. The extra run would not have helped the Dutch driver if he could not give his everything when it came to the final run in the session.

Fans on Twitter praised GP right away. One user believed that Lambiase was the only person who would stand up to Verstappen and remind him of the situation. The user wrote, “Finally someone standing up to him.” At the same time, another fan was happy to see the Red Bull engineer give an upfront answer to the two-time world champion. The fan said, “Love a sassy GP.”

On the other hand, one fan wondered why the Red Bull driver was complaining over a run in Q2 when he did make it to the next session. The fan replied, “How is Max throwing a tantrum over his Q2 position.” At the same time, another user mocked the two-time world champion for continuing to express his frustration on the team radio. The user commented, “Max still crying on the radio.”

Thus, Max Verstappen’s complaints on the team radio were not met nicely by race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase. GP made it clear to the two-time world champion that he would not have enough energy left to put in everything at the end of the session if he had gone for an extra lap. The Dutch driver seems to have agreed with Lambiase after this remark.
