Qualifying at The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya was a calamity for Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc, who was knocked out in Q1. The pole-sitter at this venue last year could not replicate even a fraction of his success, as he only managed a meager P19. This is a shocker, considering Ferrari implemented a new sidepod design and underbody as part of their first major upgrade package.

Ferrari’s renewed sidepod design should have seen them be podium contenders here in Spain. However, their pace over one lap doesn’t show as much promise, and the Scuderia should have hoped. The Monegasque once again complained about frequent drivability issues throughout his torrid Q1 session, despite their upgrades being inculcated to resolve them.

His teammate cruised into Q2 quite comfortably, suggesting it was a problem specific to Leclerc’s SF-23. Leclerc was even out-qualified by backmarkers such as Haas, Williams, and Alfa Romeo. A truly shocking display. He described the left-hand corners as “undrivable”, when speaking to the media after his exit.

Charles Leclerc saw himself only qualifying P19, just ahead of only Logan Sargeant. The likes of Alex Albon, Valtteri Bottas, and Kevin Magnussen constitute the company the Monegasque finds himself in when he starts at the back of the grid race day.

After his surprise exit shocked the F1 community, fans took to Twitter to react to Leclerc’s poor showing in the first part of qualifying. This is what fans had to say about his disastrous performance, putting a big dent in Ferrari’s weekend:

Charles Leclerc could most likely start from the pitlane on race day, as Ferrari will have to inspect the issues he faced with grip on the rear inside parc ferme conditions. He has a herculean task ahead of him to score points and salvage something for the Maranello team on Sunday.
