Felipe Massa “perplexed” by Fernando Alonso’s decision to join Aston Martin
Fernando and Felipe
Fernando Alonso recently announced that he has signed a new multi-year deal with the Aston Martin Formula One team and former F1 driver Felipe Massa is not too excited about the tie-up.
The Brazilian believes it would have been better for Fernando Alonso to stick with Alpine for 2023 rather than go to a struggling Aston Martin F1 team.
Aston Martin made it public on Monday that they have signed the Spaniard in place of the departing Sebastian Vettel. Moreover, with Alonso signing a new deal, he has secured his future in the sport for a number of years but Massa feels his gamble could turn out horribly wrong.
While stating his opinion on the predicament, Massa said, “I think Aston Martin has a lot to gain with Fernando there, I don’t know if Fernando has a lot to gain being there with Aston Martin in my opinion, the most important thing for Fernando is to have a competitive car to show what he can do.“
Aston Martin this season is fighting in the lower half of the standings and Massa has indicated that they are not going to suddenly improve for the 2023 F1 season, while stressing over it, he added, “I don’t think it will be really interesting for him.”
Would Alpine be able to secure Oscar Piastri after Fernando Alonso’s departure?
Fernando Alonso has committed his future to Aston Martin and now with Oscar Piastri also not a certainty for Alpine, questions are swirling as to who is going to fill the vacant second seat on the French team.
Esteban Ocon has a contract with Alpine till 2024 but when it comes to the other side of the garage, the team is in total shambles. Alpine, yesterday announced that they have promoted their reserve driver Oscar Piastri to drive alongside Ocon for 2023, however, the craze among the fans did not last for long as Piastri dismissed the team’s announcement.
At the moment, it is believed that Alpine is looking at legal options to do something about the situation, and with the summer break still in its early days, it is going to be fascinating to see how things are going to develop for both parties.
