Felipe Massa, along with his legal team has been digging up a lot of bones in the past few months. As him missing out on the 2008 title still agonizes him, Massa is in a full-fledged legal battle to disregard the results of the 2008 Singapore GP, which was the centre of the Crashgate controversy. Bernardo Viana, a lawyer who is a part of Massa’s legal team, recently talked about how they plan on approaching the case.

Massa has time and again said that he is looking for the title, and not the money coming with it. Viana backed this statement while explaining that they have gathered a lot of evidence to make a strong case. When asked about Bernie Ecclestone’s involvement in the scenario, Viana said that he is irrelevant to them for the case. Viana also dived in the details of the 2008 Singapore GP, explaining what makes Massa’s case very strong.

“We understand that the proper remedy would be the cancellation of the race… It was the proper way to approach the regulations. And even if they wanted to partially cancel the race, let’s say count the race until lap 14 [when Piquet crashed], Felipe would have been a champion as well, based on the regulations of the time,” Viana told Autosport (H&T: SilverArrows.net).

Bernie Ecclestone’s statements about the Crashgate controversy earlier this year paved the way for Massa for his legal battle for the 2008 title. In his statements, which Ecclestone has since denied to have given, said that he along with Max Mosley knew about Nelson Piquet Jr.’s deliberate crash before the 2008 season ended. As Massa is now rounding up all his resources in hopes for a final chance at a world title, Eccelstone recently slated his decision.

Ecclestone is not at all happy with the lawsuit against the FIA. He said that even Lewis Hamilton could have filed a case against the FIA for his controversial loss at Abu Dhabi in 2021, but instead he maintained the integrity of the sport. Even though Massa claims that he is not pursuing this case for money, Ecclestone believes that that is the sole reason for his actions.

“All Massa cares about is money, but the chances of that are zero. Hamilton and Mercedes would have been better off filing a lawsuit against the not so clean final in Abu Dhabi in 2021,” said Ecclestone.
