Fernando Alonso is one of the biggest names in Formula 1. The 42-year-old has achieved considerable success in his long-spanning career. However, the Spanish driver has been infamous for making some interesting moves such as his shock switch to Renault in 2009 and his McLaren return of 2015. As the 2024 driver market gets busy, Alonso has made it clear that he will once again decide his future on his own terms.
The two-time world champion highlighted that he had always made his decisions by himself. Fernando Alonso admitted that being the owner of his destiny has had mixed results. The 42-year-old has benefitted from his decision making a few times such as his switch to Aston Martin in 2023. However, the Spaniard acknowledged that he had been harmed from this as well.
I've been always that way. Sometimes it did help me, sometimes it did hurt me, to be the owner of my destiny.Fernando Alonso said as reported by Motorsport.com
Alonso pointed out that throughout his career, he decided when he was going to leave a squad and join a rival. Moreover, the 42-year-old even took a sabbatical from the sport on his own terms before returning to F1 in 2021.
I chose when to go from a team, when to join a team, I chose when to stop F1. And I chose when to come back.
Subsequently, Fernando Alonso made it clear that he will decide his plans for 2025. The two-time world champion is rumored to be interested in replacing Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes. The 42-year-old affirmed that he won’t let others dictate his destiny in Formula 1 regardless of the consequences.
And now I will choose what I do next year. I will not follow what others do, and they dictate my destiny. I will do it on my own. For good or for bad, this is the way I am.
Fernando Alonso gives update on contract talks for 2025
The two-time world champion had previously mentioned that Aston Martin remained his priority for next season. However, the 42-year-old has acknowledged his strong position in the driver market after Lewis Hamilton left Mercedes for Ferrari. Alonso even gave a timeline for his final decision in F1.
The Spanish driver claimed that contract talks for 2025 have not made much progress. Fernando Alonso insisted that he would want to sort out his future before the F1 summer break. This would provide ample opportunity for Aston Martin to find a replacement if the Spaniard decided to leave Silverstone at the end of this year.
t didn't change much. And it will not change in the next few weeks or races. I don't want to wait maybe until summer, because I think that will be unfair for me, and for the team, if they have to find more options, and things like that.
Certainly, Fernando Alonso holds major sway in contract discussions for next season. The two-time world champion will be on the radar of a few teams for 2025. However, so far there has been no news of Alonso’s potential move for the upcoming season. Fans would be looking forward to seeing if the Spaniard decides to extend his stay with Aston Martin for the foreseeable future.
