Aston Martin had a dream start to the season with Fernando Alonso. The 42-year-old grabbed six podiums in the initial eight races. But after the Canadian GP, his form took a hit, with him not being able to cross P5 in the four races. Despite Alonso putting the blame for his lost form on Pirelli’s new compound tires, he has recently shown his support for the same.
Pirelli introduced a new tire compound in Silverstone in a bid to increase the overall safety of the drivers. While teams like McLaren saw a sudden growth, Aston Martin saw a steep decline in their performance, with Alonso finishing P7 in Silverstone. Alonso also expressed his discontent with the change post-race.
Despite blaming the new tires for his lost form, Alonso later changed his stand, stating that Pirelli’s compound change was the right decision. He said that there might be some technical aspects related to the tires, which only Pirelli knew and took action with that in mind.
“In this case it’s a tire safety issue. I didn’t see any explosions or any things in the first part of the year but maybe they saw some critical aspects on the tyres that we don’t know. And they made the change for a reason. So I’m happy with that,” SoySport quotes Alonso.

Fernando Alonso optimistic for Aston Martin’s development after Spa
Aston Martin’s strong season start was stopped in Austria after regulation changes by the FIA. Their star driver Fernando Alonso finished P9 in Hungary before returning to the top five in Spa. Alonso said that their results in Spa show that they are on the right track for a comeback.
He said that the team analyzed their Silverstone and Hungary runs very carefully and brought corresponding upgrades to the car. He said that while they still have a long way to go, the team has taken a step in the right direction.
“We had the pace to keep one Mercedes behind and one McLaren behind, something that we didn’t have in the last few events. I think we understood a few things after Silverstone and Hungary. We were maybe going in the wrong direction in terms of setup choices and other stuff,” Alonso told Channel 4.
