The Las Vegas Grand Prix is slated to be underway in the next couple of days. The inaugural event, which has been a highlight of the 2023 calendar ever since its announcement, has proven to be unpredictable as the entire paddock awaits the fateful Sunday to analyze their performance on the street circuit. Fernando Alonso, currently at Aston Martin, recently commented on what he expects from Formula 1’s newest addition.
Alonso’s 2023 campaign has proven to be a strong one as the Spanish driver boasts 8 podium finishes in 20 races. The two-time World Champion currently ranks P4 in the Driver’s Standings as the Formula 1 circus heads towards the Sin City. Alonso, fresh off of his stellar P3 finish at the Sao Paolo Grand Prix, commented on his hopes for the upcoming race weekend in Vegas.
We want to finish the season strong with as many points as possible. It's true that we are all thinking about 2024, but we want to make sure that we go into the next campaign in the best possible position and with momentum on our side. But above all, it is important that we enjoy these last two races of 2023!Fernando Alonso was quoted by SoyMotor .
The 42-year-old driver is currently locked in battle for his P4 spot in the Driver’s standing as a blisteringly quick Lando Norris, currently in P5, fast approaches the Spaniard’s points tally. Norris trails Alonso by only 3 points with his points total being 195. With only 2 Grand Prix Weekends left in the 2023 Calendar, Alonso will be keen on defending his P4 spot as he awaits the next season.
Fernando Alonso, even at 42, wants to aim for his third World Championship
Even before his 2021 Formula 1 return, Fernando Alonso was already hailed as one of the sport’s greatest drivers. Alonso, famously, disrupted the iconic dominance of Michael Schumacher and Ferrari in 2005 while securing back-to-back titles with Renault. His move to McLaren in 2007, aiming for a third consecutive title, faced unexpected challenges in the face of a rookie teammate – Lewis Hamilton. The Spaniard’s 2007 campaign ended with Kimi Raikkonen clinching the championship.

In the years that followed, Alonso faced a series of near misses in his Title chase and team changes, losing out on the elusive third title to Sebastian Vettel in the last race of the season on two separate occasions. The two-time World Champion recently expressed his goals for the next step in his Formula 1 journey – the one after his 2021 comeback.
Winning is the fuel that an athlete needs to continue competing, and now the priority (for me) is to win in Formula 1 and try to achieve that third title.
At 42, Alonso’s determination to reach new heights in motorsport is evident. Fans and pundits alike believe he deserves the third title, and the prospect of joining legends like Jack Brabham and Juan Manuel Fangio in winning a Formula 1 title in his 40s adds to the intrigue of Alonso’s ongoing career.
