The 2023 Imola GP was a much anticipated event for the fans of Scuderia Ferrari. Whilst Monza is still on the F1 calendar, the Emilia Romagna GP is also the home race for the Italian Squad. Whilst the excitement for the home race weekend was immense, it all went down the drain with harsh weather that hadn’t been anticipated at all.

Even before the race, weather reports showed that there would be a good amount of rain during the whole weekend. Pirelli was also keen on testing new wet tyres at the event. Sadly, the weather situation got worse and the paddock was flooded. With at least two people dying and many affected by the flooding and prevailing weather conditions, all the parties decided to call off the race.

This decision came after discussions were held on Wednesday morning to assess the situation. It was considered that if there was an issue, there would be extra efforts needed from emergency services. With Ferrari’s HQ being just an hour drive away from the track, they couldn’t leave just like that. The company decided to give the Emilia-Romagna Region’s Agency for Territorial Safety and Civil Protection £1 million.

Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna said: “In times of difficulty, Ferrari has always stood by its community. We wanted to provide a concrete and immediate response to the most urgent needs of the population of Emilia-Romagna, which has been tried by a serious environmental disaster,” he stated. “With the coordination of the local authorities, to whom our heartfelt thanks go for their tireless work, this aid will bring comfort and a tangible sign of the solidarity of the entire Ferrari family,” he continued.

Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur also gave his stance on the race’s cancellation: “On behalf of everyone working at Scuderia Ferrari I would like to express our deepest sympathy to everyone affected by this terrible tragedy.Emilia-Romagna is our homeland and it’s heartbreaking to see what people are going through at the moment,” he concluded.

With the first home race being cancelled abruptly, Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz will get in the car directly for the Monaco GP weekend taking place from 26th to 28th May. On the other hand, there have been some essential personnel that are on ground and helping with the pack up. They will be transported everything from the water soaked paddock all the way to Monaco for the prestigious GP.
