Ferrari emptying the clip to give Charles Leclerc the edge over Max Verstappen at the Miami GP
Ferrari F1-75
Charles Leclerc currently stands at the top of the table with 86 points, 27 clear of the second-placed Red Bull’s Max Verstappen. And now, Ferrari is pulling out big guns to assist him in increasing his lead in the drivers’ championship.
After what seemed to be a tight weekend for Ferrari in Italy, Leclerc will now receive an entirely new power unit for the Miami GP. They hadn’t initially planned a power unit change until the 6th race in Spain, but as it stands at the moment that in order to counter Red Bull’s pace amidst the expectation that the new track will bring fast corners, they have decided to bring the change a race early.
And while big changes are expected to come in Spain, i.e., in the sixth round, after their reliability program ends, the team will introduce other upgrades to their cars. As the Italian version of the Motorsport.com reports, “Ferrari is introducing the new and improved ERS package in Miami ahead of schedule. This gives Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz more power, while improving reliability.”
Is it a forced move for Ferrari and Charles Leclerc?
Ferrari had already given a new unit to Carlos Sainz in Italy after his incident in the Australian GP. And since that unit has been found undamaged, the Spaniard will use it again for this GP. Here the switch was forced, and not strategic.
In the case of Leclerc, the move comes strategically. With Red Bull’s advantage of high speed and plenty of straights on the Miami circuit, Ferrari has been forced to bring in quick change. As per the source, “Mattia Binotto already announced after the GP of Emilia-Romagna that a medium to low downforce package will be brought to the United States to make up for the top speed gap.”
With Charles getting a new unit, his performance is undoubtedly expected to receive a massive boost. But with the introduction of the new circuit, things can be highly unpredictable.
