Lewis Hamilton protesting against the FIA's clampdown against jewellery

Lewis Hamilton arrived in Miami in style. Since his arrival, the seven-time world champion has been spotted golfing with the NFL legendary quarterback, Tom Brady, during several public appearances in the United States.

Most recently, during one of the press conferences, Lewis was spotted with three watches, two on his left and one on his right wrist, and rings on each of his fingers. This appearance is perceived as a form of protest by the Briton after the F1 race director, Niels Wittich, during one of the longest driver’s briefings, announced the enforcement of the rules more strictly, and most recently issued a letter to the teams.

To this protest, several fans have shown support, as Lewis Hamilton leads the resistance against the clampdown by the FIA. Other than Lewis, few drivers have expressed their displeasure over the new guidelines issued last month.

Last month, one of the two race directors, Niels Wittich, held a long briefing with the drivers. The meeting was heavily criticised as he announced a clampdown on drivers wearing any piece of jewellery in the car during any of the racing sessions. Moreover, the race director enforced the wearing of fireproof underwear, a move that received a strong negative reaction, especially from the AlphaTauri driver Pierre Gasly.

Wittich also issued a letter to the teams saying“The wearing of jewellery in the form of body piercing or metal neck chains is prohibited during the competition and may therefore be checked before the start.” To which Lewis said, “I don’t have any plans on removing them. They are personal things. You should be able to be who you are…They will be staying.”

At the moment, there seems to be a standoff between the Mercedes driver and the authority. With Lewis Hamilton making a point for the drivers on the grid, he is likely to rally plenty of support from the grid and the fans. Through these protests, FIA would also be forced to check its policing and look upon the rules that haven’t affected the driving in any form or manner.
