Scuderia Ferrari has got off to a rough start to the 2023 F1 season. The reliability and strategic woes continue to impact the Italian team’s results. Moreover, Ferrari has dropped in the pecking order behind Aston Martin and Mercedes. Former Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo has raised concerns over these issues as something that might affect the team in the long term.
Montezemolo stated the pain he feels at seeing the Prancing Horse struggle. He said, “It’s a knife in my wound,” Luca had been an integral part of the Scuderia for over two decades. Subsequently, he continues to have a special bond with Maranello. Luca continued, “Ferrari together with my family is the most important thing in my life. I have been around for 25 years in two periods.”
Montezemolo acknowledged that it’s hard to see the team struggling this season. “It’s painful for me, I’m sorry to see them like this,” Luca admitted that Ferrari’s current struggles might not go away in a short period as frustration grows for Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz. The team has faced these struggles for the last couple of seasons. He stated, “I don’t think it’s a short-term crisis.”

Montezomelo points out the need for rebuilding at Ferrari
Moreover, Montezomelo shed light on what Fred Vasseur‘s team needs to do to fix its shortcomings and overhaul how the team works. This could indeed help Ferrari in going back to winning ways. He concluded, “It’s a question of rebuilding, and we need to bring together the best technicians.” Luca had been the architect of Ferrari’s resurrection during the years of dominance by Michael Schumacher.
The 75-year-old referred to Ferrari’s domination during the Jean Todt and Michael Schumacher era. Ferrari had not won a world title since 1979 before Michael Schumacher created history with the Scuderia. Luca mentioned his own involvement during that period. He explained, “I brought in Todt, Domenicali, Brawn, and Byrne, Schumacher came later. There was also a serious crisis at first, but a team was built.”
Thus, Luca di Montezemolo has not been afraid of raising his concerns for Ferrari. The Italian team’s season has been riddled with problems. However, Team Principal Fred Vasseur is optimistic that the team can bounce back from its struggles. Undoubtedly, it will take time for Maranello to sort out its issues and get back to fighting for the F1 world championship.
