Ferrari pledges support to Lewis Hamilton amidst Nelson Piquet’s absurd rant: “We stand alongside F1, Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes

Lewis Hamilton

When recounting Lewis Hamilton’s victory at the British Grand Prix last year, 3-time F1 World Champion Nelson Piquet is alleged to have used a racial slur in an interview that has surfaced online. Despite colliding with Max Verstappen on the first lap at Silverstone, where the Dutch driver collided with his Mercedes adversary at the iconic Copse corner, Hamilton was still able to secure a decisive win.

With force propelling him into the fences by the side of the track, Verstappen was frightened by the event and required transport to a medical centre for preventive checkups. Despite receiving a 10-second time penalty for his part in the incident, 7-time F1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton was still able to battle back and finish clear of Charles Leclerc at the finish line.

Maranello-based racing team Scuderia Ferrari has now come out in support of the British driver, who has often been the victim of such racially instigated attacks in the world of Formula One.

When questioned about the incident in November, Piquet indicated that Verstappen was intentionally driven off the track by Hamilton and twice used the phrase “neguinho” to describe the Mercedes driver as he replayed the scenario through his head.

Mercedes later released a declaration denouncing the remarks. The statement from the Brackley-based racing team read: “We condemn in the strongest terms any use of racist or discriminatory language of any kind. Lewis has spearheaded our sport’s efforts to combat racism, and he is a true champion of diversity on and off track. Together, we share a vision for a diverse and inclusive motorsport, and this incident underlines the fundamental importance of continuing to strive for a brighter future.”
