Pre-season testing in Formula 1 is where fans will get to see some of the most bizarre creations. Ferrari has gone on to create such a situation. What seems hilarious is the fact that their latest creation was completely unintentional. Fans and critics have been shocked by the car’s nose as it has created a weird phenomenon.

During the morning session of F1’s 2023 pre-season testing, everyone noticed something very strange in the SF-23 that was being piloted by Carlos Sainz. Everyone had their eyes on the Ferrari’s front wing where a pretty big dent could be seen. This was happening at the tip of the nose. While some thought that the dent on the tip was cause due to an impact, that did not seem to be the case at all.

This weird phenomenon was caused by the air resistance. The dent in the Ferrari was reappearing at high speeds. However, when the car slowed down, the dent vanished and the bodywork was back in it’s place. This sparked a lot of special on social media where fans and critics questioned the ability and legality of this innovation. The team was also questioned regarding the same.

Ferrari did not intend to have their nose cause that effect during pre season testing

While some fans were confident that this was an innovation by the team, others took a more logical approach. Having a small dent on a smooth body panel at high speed would most likely have a negative impact on the car’s aerodynamic ability. The team themselves went on the confirm that this was not a design that they had implemented to test during pre season testing.

Ferrari stated that the bending of the bodywork at high speeds was “not intended”. This confirms the face that it was a manufacturing flaw. Whilst there will surely be an internal investigation on the piece, there was speculation that some teams would even protest against the design. However, it seems like Ferrari is keen on finding a fix for their front wing.

In previous years, there was a lot of controversy regarding Flexi wings which were imparted by Red Bull. Other teams went on to vote out the use of such an innovation. The same could have possibly happened if the dent would have given them an advantage. With Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz entering their second year as teammates at Ferrari, all is to play for as they aim to bring a championship to Maranello.
