Toto Wolff, the Mercedes Team Principal, has talked about the penalty that has been imposed on the Red Bull F1 team for its 2021 budget cap breach and has indicated that it will have a detrimental impact on the team.

Just a few hours back, it was announced that Red Bull had signed an Accepted Breach Agreement with the FIA, according to which, they have been asked to pay a fine of $7 million and have also got a 10 percent reduction in wind tunnel time going forwards.

While discussing the whole situation Wolff said, “I think as for any penalty, for us, it’s too little, for them, it will be too much.”

I think any reduction in wind tunnel time is going to be detrimental. How detrimental is difficult to judge at this stage.”

“I think in absolute terms, $7m is a lot of money. But maybe in the bigger scheme of things for Red Bull, considering the investment they do on the power unit side and on the team, it’s not.”

The Milton-Keynes-based team has been dealt a heavy blow by the FIA, and Toto Wolff ardently feels that the recent decision from the governing body of the sport, will make the other F1 teams think twice before crossing the budget cap in the upcoming years of the sport.

Wolff further added, “I think that the sum of the penalties is a deterrent, the sporting penalty, and to a lesser degree, the financial fine.”

But reputational damage that is happening is probably the biggest thing, and no team will want to come anywhere near that, because obviously, we are living in a transparent and compliant world.

Our shareholders or our partners demand compliance, and in that respect that’s just not on anymore.

Toto Wolff believes that the biggest damage that has come Red Bull’s way because of the punishment is to its reputation, and has indicated that no other F1 would want to go through what the energy drink team is going through currently.

The FIA and Red Bull saga has finally come to a close and considering the Mexican GP is on the upcoming weekend, the Austrian team will have to switch its attention to the task at hand, and be 100 percent ready for all the curve balls that might get thrown the team’s way during the race.
