With ever-increasing pressure and criticism, Red Bull’s Sergio Perez has been struggling as of late to deliver the results his team expects from him. His crash at FP1 in Hungary was the Mexican’s latest mistake in many blunders. Former F1 driver Martin Brundle could not wrap his head around the incident.

Just six minutes into the practice session at the Hungaroring, Perez went over the lines onto the grass at Turn-5 on Friday, causing the car to spin and crash into the barriers. The crash caused heavy damage to the suspension, front wing, floor, and sidepod.

Martin Brundle recalled the Mexican’s form at the start of the season, saying it was unusual for someone like him to make such a rookie mistake. Brundle believes that the pressure of delivering results has caused Perez to make such an error.

“I can’t get my head around that. It is a rookie error. I think back to his victories in Saudi Arabia and Azerbaijan. I have seen for a long time where he was perfect, and then he does that. I can only assume it’s pressure because he didn’t just clip the edge of the grass or white line, he was on the grass by a metre or something and I can’t get my head around it at all,” Brundle told Sky F1.

Although Red Bull’s engineers had the car up and running before FP2, Red Bull chief Helmut Marko has confirmed that Perez will be going into the remainder of the weekend with no spare parts.

Red Bull came to Hungary with upgrades to their car, which included a revamped sidepod design. The team must have been aiming to study the effects of the upgrades in the practice session, but Brundle believes that Perez’s accident might have affected the team’s study of the upgrades.

Brundle said that while Perez is not winning, he is expected to stay second behind his teammate, Max Verstappen. He said that making waste of new upgraded parts is not expected from the Mexican.

“ They don’t want him throwing all the new upgraded sidepods and bits and pieces in the fence. Then they didn’t get much running in the other car in the dry when they’ve got an extreme cooling situation with the sidepods,” said Brundle.
