Yuki Tsunoda’s progress was appreciated by his team principal, Franz, but he still expects much more from Tsunoda. “I must say he improved a lot,” said Franz Tost, acknowledging that the Japanese driver’s 2022 season was challenging due to the shortcomings of a heavy car. But he could maintain control of his emotions better than in his 2021 rookie season. During the 2021 season, Tsunoda gained notoriety for his radio rants, which frequently included obscene language as he expressed his annoyance at the automobile and other cars around.

Last season he was able to channel his aggression and emotions well. In 2022, Yuki Tsunoda stood out and significantly improved in the opinion of his team’s principal. Franz Tost remarked, “He improved the technical understanding on the mechanical side, on the aerodynamic side, and he also improved the tire management in the race a little bit.” when talking about Tsunoda’s competence.

The Japanese driver has years ahead of him and has been perfectly justifying why he deserves all the opportunities he gets. Franz Tost further added: “Then he simply needs to be more concentrated on Formula 1, to be better prepared for everything. It’s all the different areas, everything a little bit more.”  Tsunoda is pretty decent, but Tost claims that to go to the next level, he must develop in every area.

Yuki Tsunoda deserving of third Formula One season

Yuki Tsunoda

In 2022, the team obtaining only 35 points, did not yield the outcomes AlphaTauri predicted. After scoring 142 points in the 2021 season, there was a significant drop, but Yuki Tsunoda was nevertheless pleased with his performance. The Japanese driver, competing in his second year of the sport, was generally happy with his performance. In his third season in Formula One, Tsunoda is keen to strive, develop, and progress.

The 22-year-old got his ‘composure’ during the 2022 season: “I was stressing consistently, rushing everything. That led to stress and was frustrating and made it difficult to be alone.”  Says Tsunoda. Yuki at least thinks he is more deserving of a third season with the team. In contrast to the end of 2021, when he was astonished to learn he had kept his seat for 2022 since he did not consider he was worthy of another season.

Tsunoda has improved a lot since his rookie season. Yuki claims that the team’s numerous dependability concerns and fines negatively influenced the championship. Unfortunately, their previous season didn’t allow him to show his true skillsets. But he is far more deserving of staying. His on-track performance and off-track involvement with the team show his maturity as a driver.  Hopefully, the new car and driver line-up will do justice to the team and Yuki’s progress.
