George Russell backs Lewis Hamilton to become “totally different beast” once Mercedes finds solutions for W13
Lewis and George
George Russell the Mercedes Formula One driver has recently shared his opinion on the performances of his 7-time World Champion teammate Lewis Hamilton and has indicated that the experienced Brit still has all the tools in his arsenal to show the world what he is capable of.
The silver arrows during the 2022 season have just not been able to come up with a package that is worthy of competing with Red Bull and Ferrari. As a consequence, the Mercedes of Hamilton and Russell haven’t been able to challenge for regular podiums.
While George Russell has finished all the races in the top 5 so far, Hamilton on the other hand has struggled to put in consistent performances and is a bit behind his teammate in the Drivers Championship.
However, George Russell believes that once the team is able to develop a strong enough package, then Hamilton is going to show who he is.
While talking about being ahead of Hamilton, Russell said, “If you had told me that before the season started, I’d have been very pleased and I’d have obviously taken it.”
“Ordinarily, if you finish ahead of Lewis you’ve probably either won the race or almost guaranteed the podium. So things are obviously different. But I know how capable and great Lewis is. And I know once we’ve got the car, I’m sure he will be a whole different beast.”
George is well aware of Lewis Hamilton’s caliber and has backed him to get back to his best once the W13 is able to deliver what the drivers and the team want.
George Russell on Mercedes porpoising issue
Mercedes has struggled with porpoising all season long and it has not allowed the team to unleash the full potential of the car. Russell has further indicated that they are not looking to bring any significant upgrades but rather are trying to get on top of the porpoising issue.
“We are so fixated on trying to solve these issues, we are not really fixated on trying to maximize the race weekends and focusing on our driving because there are so many other issues to think about. So as I said, I’m sure once we’ve got a good car underneath us the true Lewis Hamilton will be out there and fighting in front.”
Russell was further asked if he believes the team can get to the front this season and the young Brit said, “Yeah, no doubt. I don’t think we are a million miles away from it. But it’s so tricky. We are trying every single run every single session, we are trying different things on the car and we just have to gather all of this information.”
“Every single track we go to you’ve got a slightly different issue. And just getting this global picture, nothing’s off the table. We’ve obviously got a drastically different concept to every other team.”
“We need to think is that the right concept? Do we need to try anything different? We believe what we’ve got offers the most amount of potential, but there are no guarantees.”
Russell has reiterated the fact that they are a World Champion side and have got all the skills necessary to develop a car that can fight at the front. Moreover, the Brit has talked about the potential that the car has but at the same time has indicated nothing can be said for certain.
Would Mercedes be able to challenge the top two teams this season?
