George Russell looked miserable after crashing out on the very last lap of the Singapore GP. The Mercedes driver displayed brilliant speed all weekend, qualifying in P2 and fighting for victory until his crash. The 25-year-old addresses his crash ahead of the upcoming Japanese Grand Prix weekend.

“So [it was] obviously disappointing to end in that way, but I’ve got to be honest, it’s history now”, said Russell. He mentioned how his mindset is about winning separate Grands Prix rather than the World Championship. Russell says an error, such as his crash in the last GP, wouldn’t have come if the racer was in Title contention.

George continued, “This year we’re not fighting for a championship, we want to go all in for a victory and make sure we secure that second place. But I can tell you, it won’t happen when we’re fighting for a championship.”  Russell’s remarks provide an interesting insight into the minds of F1 drivers. The Brit seems to imply that he would apply some risk management if he were in contention for the World Championship instead of giving it all for a single Grand Prix win.

Lewis Hamilton vows to help teammate George Russell recover from his Singapore GP crash

Lewis Hamilton won Mercedes their only Podium at Singapore. Russell had a DNF and seemed quite miserable at the post-race interview. Lewis, the veteran at Mercedes, offered to help Russell get over the crash and keep improving. Lewis said, “He had been driving phenomenal all weekend, so it was really unfortunate for him, last lap, to finish that way.”
