“George Russell is quickly becoming the leader of the team,” Jacques Villeneuve criticizes Lewis Hamilton’s outburst after the Dutch GP
Mercedes drivers George Russell and Lewis Hamilton
The Dutch Grand Prix was filled with several exciting incidents and it kept the fans at the edge of their seats. George Russell the rookie who transferred from Williams to claim the second seat at Mercedes and has been outperforming his teammate and Seven time World Champion, Lewis Hamilton since the beginning of the season.
The race at Zandvoort had its ups and downs but for Lewis Hamilton it was one of the most disappointing races of his career. At one point towards the end of the race, it seemed that Hamilton was ripe to take the first place but a strategy error at Mercedes denied him of the chance.
The strategy error angered Lewis and he burst out against his team, speaking some very harsh words towards them. Many reporters and fans condemned this sudden outburst by the champion as it was uncalled for and mistakes are possible by any team on the grid. Jacques Villeneuve a Canadian Motorsport driver spoke out against Hamilton’s angry radio call, he said, “He was aggressive, almost insulting.”
Lewis Hamilton has a record of winning at least one race of every Formula 1 season he has been a part of, but his record seems to be coming under threat with him yet to win a race this season. Mercedes this year has been unable to produce a race winning car but they have gone on the podium a few times. They have been slowly improving with every race and with the right strategy could secure their first win of the season.
Could Russell’s sudden success overshadow Hamilton’s importance in the team?
The 2022 F1 season has been disastrous for a championship team like Mercedes, but for a rookie like George Russell it has been fabulous. The 24 year old British driver has placed in top 5 of almost every race this season, with the exception of the races he did not finish.
He has been consistently outperforming his teammate and seven time World Champion, Lewis Hamilton. Currently George is 4th in the drivers championship with a total of 188 points which is 30 points more than his teammate.
With Russell’s rising stardom, many fans ponder as to whether Mercedes will shift their focus towards developing Russell as their lead driver or will they hope for another championship with Hamilton as their lead driver?
