George Russell, the Mercedes driver’s star, has been on the rise in recent times, and the Brit, ahead of the upcoming Azerbaijan GP, has made it clear that he wants to beat Lewis Hamilton in the Drivers Championship this year. Against all odds, he was able to achieve this feat last year and is determined to repeat his heroics again.

As things stand, the Mercedes F1 team does not have the machinery to challenge Red Bull, and George Russell, when asked about beating Lewis Hamilton, said to Sport Bild: “And I want to beat him again this year. It’s the same the other way around.” George Russell means business in 2023, and even if his team is not able to fight for the Championship this year, he wants to win the team battle against Lewis Hamilton as the bare minimum.

He further added, “Lewis is an exceptional driver, but he is also a human being. Like me, he’s still struggling with the car. But I have no doubt that he will find his way back to his former glory and prove why many consider him the best of all time. His successes, by which he is measured, are of course at an extremely high level.”

George Russell has admitted that he and Lewis Hamilton have both been struggling to get to grips with the W14. Moreover, he feels Lewis Hamilton, despite his early struggles in 2023, will definitely bounce back strong. Russell is well aware of the caliber of the former 7-time F1 World Champion and ardently believes that he operates at an extremely high level.

When the new dawn of F1 began last year, many were adamant that Lewis Hamilton would eat up George Russell as his teammate. However, what panned out in the season was totally unexpected. Russell was not only able to go tow to tow with Hamilton but was also able to beat him in the 2022 Drivers Championship.

This was a huge surprise up and down the paddock as Russell was in his rookie season at Mercedes last year.
