Alexander Albon broke the internet by mocking Alpine’s driver conflict with Oscar Piastri over their 2023 seat as he commemorated his new multi-year deal to keep driving for Williams. Mercedes driver George Russell was amused by Alex Albon’s quip about Alpine during their continuing contract case with Oscar Piastri.

Tuesday was one of the oddest F1 media days in recent times, with a feud erupting between the Enstone-based racing team and their Australian reserve driver. Alpine announced that Formula 2 champion Oscar Piastri would be replacing 2-time Formula One World Champion Fernando Alonso in 2023, but it wasn’t long before Piastri issued his own proclamation rejecting that he had accepted any contract.

The news of Williams’ official statement at 3 p.m. on Wednesday ignited speculations of a surprise signing, but it turned out to be restricted for Albon’s contract renewal. The British-Thai racer has signed a multi-year contract that will keep him with the team for at least another two seasons.

Alex Albon feted by almost verbatim reiterating Piastri’s assertion while customising it to his own scenario. “I understand that, with my agreement, Williams Racing have put out a press release this afternoon that I am driving for them next year. This is right and I have signed a contract with Williams for 2023. I will be driving for Williams next year,” said Albon.

Piastri, for one, saw the humour in the quip and reacted by lauding Albon on his contract renewal. “Congrats mate,” he wrote, before adding a GIF with the caption: “Well done sir, that was very good.” Albon’s close friend George Russell thought the entire thing was highly amusing. “Love that,” wrote the British driver as a reply to Alex Albon’s hilarious tweet.

It is yet to be seen as to what happens next in the Piastri saga. Alpine are obviously convinced that the agreement they have with their reserve driver provides them the ability to elevate him to a race seat without worry of him going elsewhere by declaring his contract offer without the driver’s approval.
