Haas has seen some major financial troubles in the past. During the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, the team was on the verge of exiting F1 due to a lack of funds. But the introduction of the budget cap in 2021 came as a blessing for the Kannapolis-based team. After two years, Haas’ situation has so drastically changed that team principal Guenther Steiner has claimed they are unwilling to sell the team amidst high demand.

The massive increase in F1’s popularity in 2021 sent a lot of funds going Haas’ way. Steiner said that Haas has completely come out of their difficult years and are currently in the process of rebuilding. He claimed that Haas owner Gene Haas had received many offers to buy the team but refused to sell.

“ We’ve had difficult years, like those of the pandemic, but now we’ve come out of it, and we’re rebuilding. But now, with the budget cap, we have a great medium-term opportunity to do even better: without the cap on expenses, we wouldn’t be in Formula 1.. We’ve had as many offers as you want, but he [Gene Haas] won’t sell,”  Steiner told PlanetF1.

Guenther Steiner has been with Haas since the team’s inception in 2016. While the owner of the team is Gene Haas, Steiner has always been synonymous with the team as well due to his contribution. As Haas’ value keeps on increasing, reports claim that Steiner has claimed that he is a ‘part owner’ of the team and is demanding equity equal to $900m.

According to the report by BusinessF1, this issue never came up in the past due to Haas’ struggling finances. It was not until after 2021 that they seemed to grasp their financial situation. Steiner and Haas have often claimed that they have a good relationship, but this $900m issue is looking to be most likely resolved in court only.

Steiner is known for his loyalty to Haas. As this situation further escalates, both parties will not be looking to step down. It remains to be seen how the team will function for the remainder of the season if such a massive inside conflict occurs.
