Haas contemplates dramatic sidepod change, eyeing Red Bull-inspired downwash solution

After Formula One introduced its new regulations last year, the downwash ramp solution, inspired by Red Bull, gained popularity among teams. Several teams opted for this approach, likely due to its versatility and cost-effective development. From the Spanish GP, Ferrari adopted a downwash design for their SF-23. However, Haas, who uses Ferrari power units, has chosen a different approach.

Haas claims advantages of the in-wash concept, but Simone Resta acknowledges potential future changes. He notes Haas’ distinctiveness and their mid-2021 decision. Continuous evaluation, including for this year’s car, takes place. Resta emphasizes that the VF-23’s future performance will guide any potential modifications.

“Clearly the bodywork is something that is getting a lot of attention,” he told the media. “In this part, we are a bit different to the others,” Rest said. “From the middle of 2021, and we thought we picked up the best option for us. We might change, we might not,” he further continued.

He explained that when examining the bodywork, there is a noticeable similarity in the follow-up portion of the undercut across all cars. Some teams have opted for a more aggressive approach, while others have taken a more conservative stance. Additionally, he mentioned the wide side part and the rearward section of the bodywork.

In recent times, Haas has dedicated considerable effort to making significant adjustments to their VF-23 in pursuit of enhanced outcomes. However, the overwhelming burden on the tires and brakes has been the main hurdle the American team cannot seem to resolve.

Haas engineers spoke to AutoMotorundSport about the car’s struggles. The vehicle faced race difficulties with crowded tracks, windy conditions, poor grip, and changing temperatures. It also puts excessive strain on the tires when braking hard without enough time for the brakes to cool down.

After replacing Mick Schumacher with Nico Hulkenberg, Haas had an experienced driver lineup for the 2023 F1 season. Nico Hulkenberg qualifying P2 at the Canadian GP was a standout performance for the American outfit. The German driver leads his teammate in the constructors’ in P14 while Kevin Magnussen sits in 18th place. Currently, Haas is tied on points with Williams in the constructors’ championship with 11 points in P8.
