“This is all a bit awkward” Haas praise Fernando Alonso’s comeback moments before lodging a protest taking away his points finish.
Fernando Alonso finished P7 on track at the US grand prix
Fernando Alonso had a busy drive during the 2022 United States Grand Prix, with the Alpine driver colliding with Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll, ending the race for Stroll while inflicting damage onto the number 14 car. After a stellar drive in the latter half of the race, the 41-year-old crossed the chequered flag at P7, a respectable result considering the prior collision. He brought home 6 points for the Enstone team.
The Spaniard started the race from P14 and after a lucky safety car was able to get a free pitstop and gain positions over the cars which had already pitted once. He was running P8 when the incident with his future Aston Martin teammate, Lance Stroll resulted in the two-time world champion losing out on the progress, forcing him to the back end of the field.

However while battling with Haas’s Kevin Magnussen, the right side mirror on Alonso’s car fell off, leaving it in the middle of the track. This was deemed by the Haas F1 Team as an unsafe condition for a car to race in and it swiftly lodged a protest to the stewards. This in the end resulted in the Spaniard getting a 10-second stop-and-go penalty which was converted to a 30 seconds penalty. This brought the two-time world champion to P15, taking away his brilliant recovery drive.
An Uneasy Social Media Interaction after Fernando Alonso is penalized
As the cars finished the final lap of the United States Grand Prix, the Alpine F1 team tweeted the results of its 2 cars, with Fernando finishing P7 and his teammate, Esteban Ocon getting a P11. This Tweet saw not only fans but even a team talking about Alonso’s good result with the Haas F1 team tweeting, “That was a real Magic Alonso comeback.” Soon enough this Tweet became embarrassing for both teams as Haas submitted a protest regarding Alonso’s car being in an unsafe condition.
The FIA deemed the protest valid and penalized the Spanish driver, which did wonders for the Haas garage, but put the Haas social media team into a cumbersome situation who replied to the previous tweet, saying, “Well this is all a bit awkward now.” This thread was not unseen by the Mercedes F1 team – trying to break the tension by posting a meme reaction.
