‘Hamilton’s engine may have been damaged,’ Mercedes fear grid penalty for Lewis Hamilton after a collision at the Belgian GP
Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso's crash
Lewis Hamilton didn’t finish the Belgian GP thanks to a collision on the very first lap. Lewis was the only driver to finish all the races ahead of Spa but not after. Hamilton had to retire after a fire on the back of his car and a broken floor. Ultimately Mercedes reckons for a new engine to get Lewis back with a proper set car in Zandvoort.
Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso started beside each other on the second row of the grid. As the first lap started the two already looked close to each other with Hamilton having a wonderful start overtook Alonso. But as they got further Lewis tried to get ahead of Alonso, misjudging turn 5 around the outside and the two drivers tangled with Lewis having a great jump.
Fernando didn’t hide any of his feelings and took a take over Hamilton’s charge saying, “What an idiot! Closing the door from the outside. I mean, we had a mega-start but this guy only knows how to drive and start in first!”.
Lewis Hamilton to start from the back of the grid at Zandvoort
Zandvoort is a very tough track to overtake, with Mercedes having no option but to get Lewis a new engine the seven-time world champion could be in trouble. Mercedes fears to change the whole engine for Lewis and maybe a new gearbox after both took a hit with Alonso’s crash.
Lewis took his third and the last allowed engine at Spa, a new engine or any of its components would mean a Grid Penalty for him. Dutch GP isn’t really a track for overtakes and Lewis could really face troubles with not a really competitive car in his hand this season.
Hamilton blew the grid away the last time he took a Grid Penalty back in Brazil 2021 winning the race after all the penalties. He would love to accept the same fate for himself but things could be a bit difficult for the 7-time champion.
With a DNF, Lewis is still sixth on the grid and further away from his teammate and Carlos Sainz in Ferrari. As per the Mercedes race pace, it would be interesting to see Lewis start from the back of the grid.
