Hans-Joachim Stuck: “Max Verstappen has a quality that Ayrton Senna also mastered exceptionally”
Max Verstappen
At 24, Max Verstappen is already one of the most accomplished drivers of all time. He won his first world championship last year, beating out one of the greatest of all time – Lewis Hamilton, and has since then racked up 8 more victories – bringing his total up to 28, enough for 8th place on the all-time wins list.
He is only 3 and 4 victories away from matching Nigel Mansell and Fernando Alonso respectively, and on current form, he might just achieve that this season. Right now, he is head and shoulders above everybody else on the field – and he and Red Bull elevate each other’s game. This year’s championship is also pretty much in the bag for him, and you wouldn’t bet against him to rack that tally up more in the future.
With him being just 24, it is easy to forget that Verstappen is already in his 8th season of Formula 1, and has competed in 154 Grands Prix – and he also recently surpassed Mark Webber to become the driver to compete in the most number of Grands Prix for Red Bull. He still has a very, very long career ahead of him.
Stuck feels Max Verstappen is unassailable right now
In a recent interview with Eurosport, Hans-Joachim Stuck, who drove for teams like Brabham and March during the 1970s in Formula 1, when asked where Sebastian Vettel stands in Formula 1 history, said that he is among the greatest of all time – a six driver list that includes Max Verstappen.
The German said: “In my list of the best, he (Vettel) is definitely one of the top 6 in history. After everything he has done, he is definitely in line with Michael Schumacher, Ayrton Senna, Jackie Stewart, Lewis Hamilton and also Max Verstappen.”
When quizzed further on the Max Verstappen inclusion, Stuck compared Verstappen to racing legend Ayrton Senna: “Yes. Max has a quality that Senna also mastered exceptionally. He is the driver who brakes the latest. There is currently no one who can hold a candle to him. With his skills, he is without question one of the best drivers.”
He thinks that Max Verstappen is currently way above everyone else, but right behind Max, there are a few drivers who can compete or catch up with him, such as Charles Leclerc, Lewis Hamilton, Carlos Sainz, and George Russell. He also complimented Red Bull for being incredibly organized, and that everything fits and harmonizes well for them.
