‘Have you been drinking?’: Gerhard Berger bluntly writes off any chance of a Lewis Hamilton win at the French GP
Gerhard Berger and Lewis Hamilton
Gerhard Berger reckons it’s almost next to impossible for Lewis Hamilton to win the French GP. The seven time world champion has had a resurgence of sorts in the last couple of races but has been off the pace considerably if we compare it to the likes of Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc. Lewis finished P3 at the Red Bull Ring 42 odd seconds behind Charles Leclerc and 41 behind Max Verstappen.
Lewis Hamilton had one of the worst starts to the season with only one podium in the first 8 races of the season, which came in the first race of the season in Bahrain. Ever since, it has been a struggle for a driver who is used to challenging for podiums and race wins. Mercedes’ inability to get on top of their porpoising issues has made it a really tough season for both drivers.
But, for Lewis Hamilton, things have gotten better in the last 3 races with him getting on the podium on all three occasions. The most impressive drive out of all of them came in his home race at Silverstone. It looked like that Lewis Hamilton had a realistic chance of winning his first race of the season. But a slow pit stop costed him the race.
Gerhard Berger believes a Lewis Hamilton win off the cards in France
Despite his decent results, Gerhard Berger feels there’s no way that Lewis Hamilton wins in France. He said, “I wouldn’t go that far. The Mercedes hasn’t worked really well anywhere this year. It could be maybe a bit better, but I don’t think it will go so much in this direction that they suddenly will play a role to win the race.”
“Which passport do you have? What’s going on with you guys, are you drinking or what?” he jokingly said to the hosts.
Adding to his joke, he said, “Because I think, in race trim, Lewis has been, on occasions, very quick. It could even be Lewis in first, George in second and Carlos Sainz in third. How about that?”
Gerhard Berger is known for his straightforward nature and we saw another glimpse of him being him. But, in all fairness, it will be a miracle if Lewis Hamilton wins the French GP keeping in mind Ferrari and Red Bull’s pace.
