Max Verstappen won the 2022 Emilia Romagna GP in one of the finest and most dominating ways in the turbo-hybrid era of Formula One. The Dutchman won his second race of the season with a Grand Slam victory. He Qualified for pole position, led every lap of the race, won the race and claimed the fastest lap of the race along with his win in the sprint race.

Teammate Sergio Perez finished second making it a Red Bull One-Two in Ferrari’s very own backyard. This was the team’s first One-Two finish since Malaysia 2016. And Team Principal Christian Horner heralded this weekend as one of the finest in the team’s history.

Max’s father Jos Verstappen shared a proud moment watching his son secure a Grand Slam victory at the same weekend he was announced as 2022’s Laureus World Sportsman of the Year. He becomes the first Dutch person to win the coveted award.

Jos praised Max Verstappen’s flawless performance in Imola. The Emilia Romagna GP saw tricky wet conditions on Friday and Sunday with many drivers crashing out of the race. But Max made no mistakes whatsoever and remained in full control of the car. He also credited Red Bull for setting up a formidable car that resulted in a decisive and successful outcome.

Jos described Max’s performance throughout the weekend in Imola as “tremendously strong” in his column for Verstappen.com. He wrote, “He didn’t make a single mistake, was solid and completely in control. Red Bull clearly made a step in the right direction. Of course, we knew the car would get an upgrade in Italy, but with the weather conditions, it was hard to make a comparison. But we can definitely conclude that we’ve become stronger.”

Verstappen also managed to lap Lewis Hamilton in the 41st lap of the race. The duo shared a heated rivalry for the 2021 title which went down to the last race of the season. Jos added, “Honestly, I did enjoy seeing Max lap Hamilton, after everything that happened last year. It’s not often you have the opportunity to lap a Mercedes.”

With the win in the Sprint race and the Main race on Sunday, along with the fastest lap, Max Verstappen all the maximum possible 34 points this weekend. He moves to 2nd on the Drivers standings. Red Bull’s 1-2 allows them to advance to 2nd in the Constructors championship with 113 points, 9 behind leaders Ferrari.
