“He doesn’t need to hear it from anyone,” Max Verstappen on Charles Leclerc’s costly error in Imola

Ferrari entered the Imola GP weekend with a lot of promise. After all, they were leading both championships, and had claimed two wins in the opening three races of the season. Imola is a special venue for Ferrari, given that it is deemed to be their home race. Max Verstappen and Red Bull spoiled the party for the Tifosi, as they secured a 1-2 finish on Sunday, with Sergio Perez coming in at P2.

Max Verstappen claimed his second win of the season, after he put on a dominant display on Sunday. He came into the weekend, being 46 points behind the championship leader, Charles Leclerc. Now, he leaves with a maximum of 34 points, and has cut the gap to 27 points.

Charles Leclerc was comfortably running in P3, when a costly error made him lose several positions. The Ferrari driver managed to finish P6, as he dropped some crucial points on Sunday, much to Red Bull’s and Max Verstappen’s advantage.

Max Verstappen, who has been a victim of two DNF’s this season sympathized with Charles Leclerc’s uneventful spin. The Ferrari driver was pushing too hard, when it was completely unnecessary to do so. Bringing home his Ferrari in a P3 finish would also mean a good result for Charles Leclerc, instead of going flat out in the risky conditions, which led to a spin.

Max Verstappen stated that it would have been quite painful for Charles Leclerc, but that is a price you have to pay when you push too hard. “The mistake is easily done because he was pushing hard to try and fight Checo but it is painful [for him]. I think he knows that himself, he doesn’t need to hear it from anyone in here,” said Verstappen.

Thankfully, for Charles Leclerc, he could get atleast something from the race, as he was able to rescue his Ferrari after going into the gravel. He collected 8 points, which were Ferrari’s only points during the weekend. Carlos Sainz crashed out in the first lap itself, which means that he has failed to finish two consecutive races.
