“He has Checo to thank for the win” Mika Hakkinen denies Max Verstappen credit for his victory in Baku

Mika Hakkinen gave out his views over the Red Bull finish in Baku and failed to express it as a sole Max Verstappen victory. Max won the ahead of Sergio Perez in P2 and was also thankful to DNF to both the Ferrari’s. Mika thinks this unlucky stint of Ferrari is just benefiting Red Bull and Max increasing the gap in the championship.

With another reliability issue for the Ferrari powerhouse, it always comes to a win for the Bulls and it hurts more when they finish a 1-2 every other weekend. Mika also viewed the unlucky Ferrari weekend muck worse because of the Red Bulls utilising the most out of it. It was the third 1-2 finish for the Austrian team and the 6th win in 8 races for the team.

“To have both cars fail to finish is one thing, but on a day when Red Bull then scores a 1-2 finish to extend their lead in both the Drivers and Constructors World Championships is a disaster. Every mistake will be punished by Red Bull, which is what we have seen again in Baku,” said Mika on the third continuous failure for the Ferrari team

Sergio Perez took the lead for the Baku Grand Prix in the first lap from Charles Leclerc, hitting the inside of the turn 1 also thankful to the Ferrari’s lock-up. He extended the gap for the lead to more than seconds, ending up using his tyres hurting him later in the race. Perez was later ordered not to fight his teammate for the lead after letting him through.

Sergio was also given a 5-second pit stop ending his hopes for the win, “Max has Checo to thank for the win, in my opinion, not only in accepting the team’s strategy but also in having a 5-second pit stop at a key moment in the race,” said Mika.

Red Bull has now extended the lead for the constructors to more than 80 points and is leading the Driver Championship with a 1-2 with Max in the lead.
