Ferrari have not currently announced any of their drivers to be the no.1 and/or no. 2, and it has become seemingly hard after the French Grand Prix, where Leclerc made a mistake and took himself out of the race, and at the same time, Carlos Sainz, who started the race from the back of the grid, was able to catch up till the podium places, finishing 5th due to a late pit strategy. Both of the drivers have different qualities, and that is what is causing the team to not choose between a 1st and 2nd driver.
However, Damon Hill, former F1 World Champion recently said in an interview that Sainz carries the qualities of a no. 1 driver.
In an interview with SkySports, Hill was asked about the recent happenings at Scuderia, the small mistakes that the team has made, and other strategic errors that are costing them the World Title. According to him, the team needs a troubleshooter, who would help the team work in the direction they should, and while talking about the same, he stated that Sainz has shown similar qualities that the team needs right now.
Carlos Sainz reflects better strategies for Ferrari
According to the former champion, Charles is undoubtedly quick, but there are a few things about Sainz that make him better with the team, such as the pit strategies, radio calls, which help the team to progress. One of the major examples for the same is the Monaco Grand Prix, where the pit strategy that was suggested by the Spaniard came in handy and earned him P2 in the race after fighting hard with Checo.
Similarly, his data on the hard compound during the French Grand Prix helped the team in knowing that the tyres are lasting for a shorter time than they expected.
All of this strategic knowledge that Sainz has makes Hill believe that he could be the potential no.1 driver for the team.
