“He has to get his emotions under control,” Franz Tost reveals what Yuki Tsunoda needs to do to secure F1 seat for 2023
Franz Tost and Yuki Tsunoda
Yuki Tsunoda has shown himself well during the recent races of F1 and AlphaTauri’s Team Principal, Franz Tost believes that the Japanese driver is doing most things right, but needs to get a handle on his emotions that have proven to get the better of him every now and then.
Moreover, the 2022 F1 season is 15 races down and Yuki Tsunoda is yet to sign a contract extension with AlphaTauri for 2023 amidst the ongoing shenanigans regarding the future of his teammate Pierre Gasly.
While Pierre Gasly’s future at AlphaTauri is up in the air, the same is the case with Tsunoda, although for different reasons. In the 22-year-old’s case, the situation is a bit bright as it is believed that he is in a good position to get a contract extension considering the improvement he has shown compared to last year.
Franz Tost has previously indicated that Yuki Tsunoda is going to continue with the Faenza-based team in 2023 but as things stand, there has been no official announcement regarding the driver lineup at AlphaTauri for next season.

Franz Tost on Yuki Tsunoda’s improvements in 2022
In 2021, Yuki Tsunoda came under a lot of criticism for his erratic driving style, but with a season under his belt, the Japanese driver has done well this year, and Tost while appreciating him said, “His performance is increasing. Look to the qualifying in Zandvoort, look to FP1 here in Monza.“
“He is in the car, he is doing a really good job. He just has to get his emotions under control, and he must be more disciplined because to ignore a yellow flag in FP1 is not clever.
“I understand that it’s difficult in qualifying, maybe sometimes in the race, but in a free practice session, you in any way have to accept yellow flags and react in the correct way, which means you have to slow down.”
The hierarchy at AlphaTauri is pleased with the exploits of Tsunoda and after looking at Tost’s comments, it is quite safe to assume that he is in an extremely good position to get a contract extension, he just needs to be more careful while doing his thing on track.
As far as the upcoming Italian Grand Prix is concerned, Yuki Tsunoda is starting the race from the back of the grid after taking an engine penalty and is going to try and make up as many places as possible.
Moreover, Yuki Tsunoda so far in the 2022 F1 season has scored 11 points and with only a few races left in the season, is going to look to score as many points as possible to put himself in an even stronger position than he already is to secure the seat for 2023.
