It was a season which was tailormade for Daniel Ricciardo to come into his own, put the foot on the accelerator and showcase his entire range of attributes in that MCL-36. The writing was on the wall but nothing has gone according to the script for the Australian in the first half of the season. This has become a cause of concern for Zak Brown and Andreas Seidl, who are starting to look for his replacement.

Daniel Ricciardo has a contract with McLaren till the end of the season but there have been reports of that contract being prematurely terminated, provided Oscar Piastri is up for grabs. It’s been a crazy transfer market which has seen Alpine lose Fernando Alonso to Aston Martin after Sebastian Vettel decided to retire from the sport at the end of this season.

Oscar Piastri’s arrival to Alpine looked like a mere formality but table turned upside down after he rejected to drive for Alpine. It seems like Daniel Ricciardo might have to pay the price for the confusion. It’s true that Daniel’s performances have been below par and it’s justified to put it under the scanner. But, at the same time, it’s important to give him credit for what he has done for McLaren despite his stuttering start to this season.

Former Force India driver Paul di Resta has jumped to Daniel Ricciardo’s defense amid all the criticism. He said, “He is definitely not performing like they would want him to, they would want him a bit further up. They need more consistency, for him to be more regular, pushing Lando, in the zone – a bit like the Lewis and George situation.”

Talking about his talent to still deliver in F1, Paul said, “When Daniel is given a car, he gets race wins and gets results, but they are not going to change the car to suit him.”

“I don’t think there is a single person in the paddock that doesn’t want it to work for him. He is a credit to Formula 1 and a fair racer.”

Daniel Ricciardo has shown in bits and pieces that he still has the talent and the ability to grind out performances week in and week out. But it’s about time that he delivers consistently or his legacy could be in danger.
