Toto Wolff, the Mercedes Team Principal, after the end of the Italian Grand Prix, has praised his reserve driver Nyck De Vries for scoring his maiden points in F1 with the Wantage-based Williams team.

Nyck De Vries has been associated with the Mercedes outfit for many years, and to see him get a P9 finish in his maiden race in the pinnacle of motor racing, has filled Toto Wolff and Co. with a lot of joy for the Dutchman.

While De Vries had a splendid outing for the Williams F1 team, the Silver Arrows also had a race to remember with its drivers George Russell and Lewis Hamilton.

The two Brits were on song at Monza as George managed to secure a podium by finishing in P3 and Lewis, on the other hand, was able to charge his way from the back of the grid to finish his exploits with a respectable P5.

Wolff, after the race, sounded satisfied with the outing of the Silver Arrows and said, “It was a question of maximizing our result and doing damage limitation with Lewis. It was enjoyable to watch him fight through the pack – he looked a little bit stuck at the beginning, then once the tires came together, he was very quick.”

As for George, he did everything we asked of him, and it was another faultless drive.”

Nyck De Vries slotted in the FW44 in place of Alex Albon for the Williams F1 team, and despite having very less experience of driving their car, was able to hold a pack of rival cars behind him for the most part of the race.

Moreover, the 27-year-old was able to keep his nerves under check which helped in landing the Driver of the Day award for the Italian Grand Prix.

Wolff who closely followed the exploits of De Vries during the race, in the post-race interview, said, “Finally, a word for Nyck: he did the absolute maximum today, jumping into a car he had barely driven in FP3, then scoring two points. It showed exactly what he is capable of.”

Nyck De Vries, at the moment, does not have a seat confirmed in F1 for the 2023 season, but after his Monza outing, he has done enough to garner the attention of the various teams and it is going to be fascinating to see whether he will get approached during the upcoming months of the current campaign.
