“He was pretty superior last year,” Guenther Steiner takes a slight dig on Nikita Mazepin for not being able to keep up with Mick Schumacher
Nikita and Guenther
Guenther Steiner the Haas Team principal has recently shed light on the dominant display of Mick Schumacher against former teammate Nikita Mazepin during the 2021 season.
Guenther Steiner who had a few bust-ups with Mazepin during the 2021 season believes that Schumacher did not have much competition within the team during that time and he is only getting it this season with the arrival of Kevin Magnussen at the team.
Steiner during an interview was asked if he believed Mick did not have a proper reference during 2021 and the Italian-American said, “Maybe. I think it was difficult for Mick at the beginning too because he was pretty superior last year.
“And then all of a sudden he’s pretty much inferior. I do think that that has an impact on how a driver drives, and how he puts himself under pressure. He had to learn that.”
“I always say, ‘The higher you go, the thinner the air gets and the thicker the fur you need.’ “Let’s take the duel with Verstappen at Silverstone.”
“He lost it, but that was good for him because he learned a lot from it. It’s best to come from the really good guys. When you fight opponents like that, you learn quickly.”

Guenther Steiner: A lot of guys come from F2 and they think they already know how F1 works
Guenther Steiner who has been associated with the sport for quite some time feels that Formula One is a whole different ball game as compared to Formula 2 and while stressing about the drivers that are able to make it to F1 has said, “In the back, I don’t think he was able to learn that much about how Formula 1 works last year.
“A lot of the guys come from Formula 2 and think they already know how Formula 1 works, but that takes time. You can’t force it. It’s like school: you can’t learn four years’ syllabus in two days either.”
“Now Mick has to learn to drive a better car and to fight further up the front and score points. Logically, the fight is harder further up the front. That’s normal.”
“That’s why I think it’s good that we’ve reached this level now. Now we have to Take level after level until it is quite normal to fight for points.”
Guenther believes Haas is headed in the right direction and for them it is all about consistency, putting up performances race and race so that it becomes normal for the team to fight for points.
Kevin Magnussen has been around the sport for quite some time and knows how to go about challenging cars up the grid, moreover, with Mick Schumacher also starting to hit his strides, the future could be a bright one for the team if they are able to carry on with the good form for the rest of the 2022 season.
