“He’ll come stronger from Spa onwards,” Christian Horner stands up for Sergio Perez after Helmut Marko’s criticism

Christian Horner has come out to defend Sergio Perez after what has transpired in the last couple of races. The Mexican has looked like the finished product that Red Bull were looking for ever since Alex Albon was let go after the 2020 season. Sergio has had a brilliant first half of the season despite his disappointments in the last few weekends as he finds himself third in the championship behind Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc.

But, unfortunately, the 32 year old’s form in the first 10 races has seemed to have withered away which has been a cause of concern for Red Bull. Last time Sergio Perez was on the podium was the British GP where he came from the back of the grid to finish P2. It’s been a dull string of results for Sergio Perez ever since as he has struggled to regain the blistering form he was in at one point in time.

Checo was caught napping during the French GP which saw George Russell take that last podium position after the VSC. It seemed like that Sergio had a lapse in concentration costing him a podium finish. He didn’t look comfortable at the Hungarian GP which has left him 85 points behind his team mate and championship leader, Max Verstappen. Helmut Marko was particularly critical of him after the result in France.

But, Team Principal Christian Horner has jumped to Mexican Defense Minister’s defense amid the criticism. Horner explaining Marko’s statement said, “I made a joke to Helmut the other day, I said ‘I think Checo’s gone on holiday already’, and he went and told all you guys!

“I see room for improvement with Perez and I think the summer break may help him do so.”

“I think a reset over the summer break, just to understand what’s not gone quite right for him at the last couple of races [is needed], he’ll come stronger from Spa onwards.”

It’s pretty normal for any driver to have a dip in form and Sergio Perez is no different. But, it’s important for Red Bull that he bounces back quickly or they could be in a spot of bother in the constructor’s championship against Ferrari.
