“Helmut gave me a lot of shit over the years”: Daniel Ricciardo on his relationship with his former Boss Helmut Marko

For Daniel Ricciardo, who was just a newbie when he joined Formula 1 more than a decade ago, his big break came in the form of a Red Bull contract which he signed, and he stayed with the Milton-Keynnes-based team till the end of 2018. Even though it has been about four years since Ricciardo left Red Bull, the Honey Badger has remained in good terms with most of the Red Bull personnel, including RB Chief Advisor Dr. Helmut Marko.

In a recent interview, Daniel Ricciardo dished out on the details of his relationship with Marko, and also talked about the “sh*t” that he had to deal with, under Marko’s watch.

Daniel Ricciardo has had one of the most unconventional careers in the history of Formula 1 as many fans believe he signs contracts with new teams on a momentary whim. In 2018, Daniel Ricciardo was a Red Bull racer with numerous Grand Prix victories to his name, and he knew he could have received even more opportunities has he chosen to stay at the British team. But the Australian left Red Bull and ended up in McLaren via Renault, where he is currently having a very hard time adjusting to the car.

Even though Red Bull never wanted to terminate their contract with Ricciardo in 2018, he jumped ship himself, but he believes Helmut Marko would never give him an “I told you so” lecture because the Austrian knows it is “a part of the game.”

Speaking of Daniel’s current relationship with the Red Bull executive, Ricciardo have his opinions saying, ”Helmut gave me a lot of shit over the years, so didn’t need to sit down… after I left there was no need for that any more! I would say that obviously I have less interactions with Helmut these days but of course, I would say the relationship is still the same. It’s very honest, very Helmut. My admiration or respect for the man has remained unchanged. He’s a good guy.”
