Sergio Perez’s situation at Red Bull is at its most vulnerable at the moment. The Mexican’s poor form has cast major doubt over whether he will even see out the entirety of his contract. It was reported by Globo that Perez was told he would be ousted in 2024 if he didn’t finish P2 in the WDC. However, Red Bull principal Helmut Marko has denied such reports.
This denial comes amidst an already ongoing tussle between Helmut Marko and Christian Horner. While it may be unlikely that Red Bull remove Perez before his contract expires, the move could be a part of some bigger internal conflicts in the team. There have been several reports about instability in the upper management of the team for some time now.
Marko, in his statement, told OE24, “There’s no ultimatum for Perez. I believe we’re winning too much – unbelievable things are being circulated.” While Marko has explicitly denied any reports of an ultimatum, Perez will still have the pressure to finish P2 in the standings.
Sergio Perez talks about his future in Formula One and Red Bull
Sergio Perez had a strong start to the 2023 season. Winning two out of the first four races, he was projected to be a title contender. However, things soon fell out of place as he was nowhere near the current title holder Max Verstappen. His poor performances and bad luck at instances resulted in him going more and more into a downward spiral. Amidst various reports emerging of him getting the sack from Red Bull in 2024, he talked about his future in F1.
Perez’s concern about being replaced must’ve peaked when Red Bull brought in Daniel Ricciardo from the sidelines to race for AlphaTauri. The 33-year-old revealed that he wants to be in F1 for at least three more years. He said that he still has a lot to contribute to Red Bull for which he sees 2024 as the perfect opportunity.
“I have a contract with Red Bull for 2024 and next year it is important to have a good year, I think I still have a lot to give. I hope and want to stay in Formula 1 for another three or four years,” said Perez.
