Helmut Marko indirectly calls out McLaren for not building the best car this year
Helmut Marko
Helmut Marko, the chief advisor for Red Bull, has shorted out Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen as the contenders for this year’s championship. The holders of P1 and P2 have the right car since the start, putting them ahead of the rest of the grid.
When asked who can be the third potential contender for the championship, Marko named McLaren’s Lando Norris. He believes the Briton is the one at par with both Max and Charles, but there’s only one thing that holds him back. Marko, as quoted by Auto und sport, said, “The only pilot that I still see talented in this league is Lando Norris, but he doesn’t have the best material at the moment,” taking a subtle dig at McLaren for failing to provide Lando the right car to fight for the championship.
In the past, Marko has taken digs at plenty of teams. This dig at McLaren is an attempt to target their inability to build a car as good as either of the top teams, i.e, Ferrari and Red Bull. By extension, it can be a comment on Mercedes’ engines as well, considering their expectedly poor performance at the start of the season.
Helmut Marko believes Mercedes is unable to challenge the top
Mercedes’s start to the season has been underwhelming. The mess that they have on their hands with the porpoising is halting their drivers’ progress and keeping them from fighting for the podiums.
The lack of points has also given Helmut Marko to comment on them. By saying that he only sees Lando Norris as the competition to Max and Charles, the Red Bull’s advisor has fired shots at Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, targeting them and ruling them out from the championship.
Lewis and George currently stand P7 and P4 on the drivers’ leaderboard, with Charles at P1 and Max at P2. The arrangement appears to be strange, especially for Lewis Hamilton, whom we have seen at the top consistently for nearly a decade.
