Red Bull F1 team advisor Dr Helmut Marko and Sergio Perez have possibly had a bit of tension in the past few races due to the Mexican driver’s poor performances. Nevertheless, the Austrian has gone on to defend Checo. Even Christian Horner, the team principal has gone on to show his support towards Perez in recent times. The Mexican has gone on to improve his game since then.

Red Bull has been a team known for its ruthlessness when it comes to their drivers. Many racers such as Pierre Gasly and Alex Albon have been victims to the team. Sergio Perez has entered his third season in F1 as a part of Red Bull. His performances in qualifying a few races back were disappointing and coincided with the team firing Nyck De Vries.

When Helmut Marko was asked if something similar could happen to Sergio Perez when asked in an exclusive interview with Formel1.de, here is what he had to say. “Pérez doesn’t have the same contract,” the Austrian explained. “We don’t want this pressure and political struggle in the team,” he said later on in reference to Pérez. The Austrian indicated that Checo’s clause meant that he wouldn’t be demoted.

Sergio Perez still needs to improve his qualifying pace

Dr Helmut Marko had joked before that he would have Nico Hulkenberg for qualifying in the RB-19 and Sergio Perez for the race. The Mexican driver had qualified in 9th place in Hungary which was slightly better than getting knocked out of Q1. However, having the fastest car on the grid, it was still not good enough of a performance from him. The Mexican driver has a lot of expectations from the team.

The 2023 Belgian GP race weekend has been a bit different for the Mexican. While Max a Verstappen qualified on pole position, he is set to take a 5 place grid penalty for the race demoting him. Sergio Perez on the other hand qualified third which means that he will be on the front row alongside Charles Leclerc for Sunday’s race. It will be interesting to see where the Mexican racer finishes.
